ANTAKSHARI
Held at Novotel Sukhumvit 33 on Thursday December 4, 2003 starting 7:00 p.m.
Rules Schedule Final Team Score
· We will designate 3 judges for all rounds. There will be 3 contests:
1. Adult Selection Contest
2. Children Competition
3. Main Adult Competition.
· Antakshari has 60 points distribution out of the 1,000 total House Color Event points. Adult team color winner will receive 45 points, while Child will receive 15 points. Second place Adult team gets 30 points, while child gets 10 points. If 2 teams are placed second, both will get the points.
· A Male and Female MC will be chosen for the evening. We will find 1) one pair of MC for Adult Competition (Selection Contest and Main Competition) and 2) another pair of MC for the Children Competition.
· General Rules:
· Any hints from the audience will result in the loss of points if hinted by a member of your team. If hinted by someone else, the judges will look at the intention and decide a “replay” or “loss”, depending on the intention.
· Each round will have a time limit within which the singing must begin or it is an automatic loss of points.
· Each competition will begin with a quick “Character” round just for warm up. We expect all teams to get the points for this round, but we have it for warming up.
· If more than 3 words are incorrect in a song, the judges will most likely decide to decline giving the points; unless, they feel it is “good enough”.
· Songs must be familiar to the judges to get points. We will only allow Hindi Film songs. No shabads, no English songs, no folk songs, and no remake Rap versions of old songs (unless appears in a movie). Some vague song no one has ever heard of will also not be allowed.
· The judges’ decision is final.
· Rules for the Character Round:
o This is not a buzzer round.
o The next song must start with the first character (using phonetic sound and not necessarily Hindi) of the last word of the current song (this is a bit different than regular antakshari, but it is less ambiguous). For example, if it ends with “sanam”, the next song should begin with “S” (not “M”).
o We will use phonetic sounds for characters and not exactly the spelling in Hindi. Thus, characters that can be substituted because they sound the same include: 2) The “Gh” sound in “Ghar” vs. “Ghobi”, 3) The “Bh” sound in “Bina” vs. “Bhai” 4) The “Jh” sound in “Jaan” vs. “Jhanda”, 5) “Dh” in “Dana” vs. “Dhaba”. Characters that cannot be substituted include 1) “Sh” vs. “S”, 2) the “T” sound as in “Tum” vs. the “T” sound in “Toota” (This substitution will be allowed for Kids competition only), 3) “K” vs. “Kh”, 4) “Ch” as in “Chachi” vs. “Chokri”, 5) “P” vs. “Ph” as in “Pani” vs. “Phool”. Otherwise, let the MC decide by saying what your song’s starting character should be.
o The song should be sung with at least 1 verse of 4 phrases (2 phrases for children), also making sure not to leave a conceptual sentence incomplete.
o Each team will have 10 seconds to start singing or will lose the points. Kids will have 15 seconds.
o If a team misses or incorrectly guesses a character, the next team will automatically get that character, and then the next until a team gets it (or all teams have tried the character).
o 5 points per correct song, 0 points for incorrect song.
· Rules for the Word Chit Round:
o This is not a buzzer round.
o The beginning stanza of the song or of the song’s chorus must have the given word picked randomly from a box. If a mistake is made and the judges decide that the song is not the first stanza, another chance will be given using the same word.
o As long as the word is there it is allowed. For example, if we have the word “Muhobat”, the word “Muhabatay” will also be allowed because “Muhobat” is covered in “Muhabatay”. However, given the word “Janaam”, you cannot sing with just the word “Jaan”. Also “Shisha” cannot substitute “Shishi”, since not a substring.
o Each team will have 20 seconds to start singing. Kids will have 30 seconds.
o The song should be sung with at least 1 verse of 4 phrases (2 phrases for children), also making sure not to leave a conceptual sentence incomplete.
o 5 points per correct song, 0 points for incorrect song.
· Rules for the Music (Dhun) Buzzer Round:
o Only the music from any part of a song will be played.
o First one to press buzzer gets to guess.
o A guess is considered correct if the beginning OR the chorus of the song OR any important part of the song is sung that the judges feel identifies the song. At least 2 lines must be sung (one sentence).
o If incorrectly guessed, no other team may guess (the song is revealed and removed)
o The team that pressed the buzzer will have 5 seconds to start singing or be considered as incorrect guess.
o Incorrect guess MINUS 5 points. Correct wins 5 points.
· Rules for Visual Buzzer Round
o A silent video clip from a part of a song will be played.
o First one to press buzzer gets to guess.
o A guess is considered correct if the beginning OR the chorus of the song OR any important part of the song is sung that the judges feel identifies the song. At least 2 lines must be sung (one sentence).
o The team that pressed the buzzer will have 5 seconds to start singing or be considered as incorrect guess.
o Incorrect guess MINUS 5 points. Correct wins 5 points.
· Rules for Movie/Actors Chit Round
o This is not a buzzer round.
o A chit will be picked randomly for each team to indicate the movie name plus actors/actresses singing the song. For example, “Sing a song from Movie Sholay sung by Amitab and Dharminder”. The participant must sing “Yeh Dosti … hum nahi choreh gay” (at least 2 lines – one sentence as shown here).
o A guess is considered correct if the beginning OR the chorus of the song OR any important part of the song is sung that the judges feel identifies the song. At least 2 lines must be sung (one sentence).
o 5 points per correct song, 0 points for incorrect song.
o Each team will have 30 seconds to start singing.
o If the teams are seated in the sequence Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, for example. If Red team is unable to guess or makes an incorrect guess, the next team in the sequence which, in this example, is Green may answer to get 2 bonus points (Time given: 5 seconds). If even Green cannot guess, it goes to the next team (Blue) and so on until all remaining teams have tried for the 2 bonus points. Once answered or if no team is able to answer, the next team in the sequence (Green in this example) will always get to select a new chit.
· The first selection rounds will start at 7:00 sharp. Those not present will automatically be disqualified.
· Each Color should find a minimum of 3 teams and a maximum of 6 teams to enter the Adult Selection Contest. Each team will consist of 3 persons, in which all three must not be of the same gender (1 woman/2 man or 2 woman/1 man).
· The objective of this round is to eliminate all the teams of each color, so that only 1 team per color is left.
· First Round: Character Round done 1 Round
· Second Round: Word Chit Round done 1 Round.
· Third Round: Music (Dhun) Buzzer Round with 5 Songs. The one best team from each color will be selected to enter the evening’s competition based on the team Antakshari score. If 2 or more teams have a tie in score, another Music Buzzer Round will serve as the tie breaker.
· Children are those who are not yet 11 years old by December 31, 2003; i.e. born in 1993 or after that year.
· Each color should select 1 team of 4 children (all 4 must not be same gender) for Child Round entry. You can have your own separate “heats” to decide who your team’s 4 representatives should be, but on this evening we allow you to have only 1 child team per color.
· First Round: Character Round done 1 Round.
· Second Round: Word Chit Round done 2 Rounds.
· Third Round: Visual Buzzer Round with 5 Song Clips from recent movies (since 1997). If there is a tie for first place, a tie breaker Visual Buzzer Round among the top teams will be used to determine the top color. A tie for second place will be allowed (both will get the second place points).
· First Round: Character Round done 1 round.
· Second Round: Word Chit Round done 2 Rounds.
· Third Round: Movie/Actors Chit Round done 2 Rounds.
· Fourth Round: Music (Dhun) Buzzer Round with 5 Songs.
· Fifth Round: Visual Buzzer Round with 5 Song Clips. If there is a tie for first place, a tie breaker Visual Buzzer Round among the top teams will be used to determine the top color. A tie for second place will be allowed (both will get the second place points).
