Divisions:  (Age is determined as of September 1, 2004)

The Child division must have at least 1 girl on the field at all times.  Thus, each child team should try have at least 2 girls on their team for convenience in substitutions or your girl will have to play the entire game. If you do not have a girl on field, you will have to play with 4 players, unless your opponent does not have a girl on field either because of a no show or because the girl is sitting out on substitution.

Some Changes Are Possible:

Schedules may be adjusted if NIST has a problem with providing us with the court on some of the dates listed above, although we have scheduled the dates with them.  Also, some divisions may be adjusted (cancelled or added) to meet the registration demand.

REVISED BASKETBALL SCHEDULES      Dated September 21, 2004

Note: We expect another revision for the Saturday (youth and child) games this week, because there seems to be a conflict in court availability.  So please stay tuned for updates.

Format

  • Number of Players:  8-10 players per team with 5 on the court. Child divisions must always have at least 1 girl on the court at all times.

  • Basket Height and Ball. The Adults will play with standard sized ball, the youth will play with 1 number less (no. 7), the children will play with 2 numbers less (no. 6). Basket height will be standard for youth and adults, while lowered by 2 approximately 2 feet for the children division (as setup by NIST officials).

  • Play Time: Each adult and youth competition is 3.5 minutes per period while child is 3 minutes per period, with 8 periods in a game. The clock will only stop for free throws during periods 1-7.  In the last (8th) period, the clock will stop for every dead ball. After each period, players waiting must switch in to ensure everyone gets to play at least half a game. There will be no breaks between periods, except after 4 periods which is half time, when there will be a 2 minute break and a switch in sides.

  • Time Keeping: The time keeper will sound an alarm (horn please) at the end of each period, when the referee will decide when to blow his whistle to stop the game, at a time that the ball is "dead" or not very active.  However, for the 4th and 8th periods, the time keeper will sound an alarm for end of half or end of game, after which the referee need not wait for a dead or inactive ball to call an end to the game.

  • Ball Possession: Possession at the first period will be decided by a jump ball in mid-court.  Each jump ball after that will be decided by a possession arrow, that starts by favoring the team that lost the initial jump ball.  After each period, the possession will go to the team having the ball in the end of the previous period (except for the start of second half or 5th period).  In the start of 5th period or second half, the possession arrow determines who gets the ball to start with.

  • Delay of Game:  There should be an extremely short break between periods (except the 4th period which is first half).  Thus, if only one team is ready after a period, the referee has the right to blow the whistle, since the game should have started by then.  If the other team is not ready, the team that is can start attacking immediately. If the team that is not ready is supposed to have possession, the possession will be granted to the ready team, and attacking will begin. This is to avoid a delay of game between periods, since we need to get the games moving.

  • Time Outs: Only 1 timeout of 1 minute is allowed in the entire game. You can save plans for half time.

  • Fouls: Each player is allowed 4 personal fouls in one game, counting the overtime play.  On the 4th foul they must leave the court and not be allowed to play that game. Each team is allowed 7 fouls per half, after which it becomes a 1 for 1 free throw every time the team commits a foul. The overtime play is considered part of the second half, so the team fouls will continue to be counted.

  • Strict Substitution Rules: Each 3.5-minute period end will have a very short break just for switching players. Substitutions will not be allowed at other times. Players switching is required every period (half a quarter) so that no one sits for 2 consecutive periods. All players present must play at least half a game (4 periods), unless there is an injury.  If any player gets to play less than half a game and has complaints about it,  the team will automatically be disqualified.

  • Team Rankings: In each game the wins will get 2 points, loss 1 point, and walkover 0 points. No game will end in tie, because we will have a jump ball to start a sudden death play. If after the complete round robin there is a tie between 2 teams, we will resolve by head-to-head. A tie between 3 teams will be resolved by goal difference.
